Sorry to disappoint, I know dick about Datsuns, apart from the fact they made the Fairlady 240z, so I found a nice one for yourselves

The valve cover shows that it's an L engine, which is the block Nissan used for all Z cars up until 1984. However, the valve cover looks to be painted black with red accents in the middle, with raised lettering that looks a lot the turbo L28 model (L28ET, L = engine block 28 = size (2.8 liters) E = electronic fuel injection, T = turbo). this was, when it came out, the most powerful engine ever built by a Japanese manufacturer (180 net HP) and wasn't actually allowed to be sold in Japan, since regulation forbid turbos on any engines larger than 2.0l. It was released in 1980, and it's a popular swap for earlier cars (the one in the picture is a 1972-1973 240z, I think) which only had the 135 net HP L24, no fuel injection or turbos). It looks like this:

Another interesting note, the L engine is a non-crossflow (intake and exhaust come out of the same side) single-cam iron block engine, weighing more than a Chevy small block and yet only producing ~150HP. However, it's low stroke, with modification, allows it to reach insane RPM levels and it's iron block and alloy head means that it takes turbocharging very well. A "180" HP L28ET can be made to reach 300HP with a reasonable amount of cheap modification, and the non-turbo models can still hit 220HP before things get very expensive.
